Kos is one of the most popular of the Greek Islands for a family holiday because of its many long sandy beaches and sunny climate. Most of our resorts are located close to these beaches and for value for money they are difficult to beat. The island is long, thin and mostly flat with little of the dramatic scenery usually found on the other Greek Islands. In fact you will see more bicycles than cars here and they are easy and cheap to hire. The best beaches spread out from the capital, Kos, and are sandy and shelve gradually making them very safe for small children. Beaches do tend to get very crowded, so make sure your holiday option includes a large pool area with a kid’s pool. Check out our great selection of Child Friendly holidays in Kos below or read on for some tips on attractions and days out.
Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in Kos:
- The Greek God of Medicine, Asclepios, was reputed to have been born here, and his temple is one of the most famous tourist sites on the island. It is only 4km from Kos and worth a visit. Might be an idea to brush up a little on Greek Gods before you go and their exploits make fascinating reading for children.
- Boat trips are always a popular option for kids, as long as they are not too long. Kids will definitely enjoy the trip to the island of Nisyros with its very own mini volcano. On the way up to the crater there are fumaroles, steam vents with boiling mud and sulphur. Sounds horrible but kids love this kind of thing and there is a pretty village with very narrow streets filled with beautiful flowers to compensate. Dont come in flip-flops or light sandals though or your feet will burn.
- A day trip to neighboring Turkey is definitely worth serious consideration as there are numerous daily sea crossings to Bodrum. A hydrofoil service takes just 20 minutes and a less expensive ferry takes just under the hour. Fares are not too expensive. If you do decide to go, remember to take your passports.
- One thing you will immediately notice in Kos is the number of bicycles. The lack of almost any hills on the beach resort side of the island has made cycling really popular. So why not join them? It is fun, inexpensive and eco-friendly.
- The main town and port on the island, also called Kos, is well worth a day out to see the tree lined promenade, whitewashed buildings and a 14th century fortress erected by crusading Knights. There is an enormous choice of places to eat and a large Tourist Office. There are also ferries from here to other islands and Turkey.
