Larnaca is one of the major seaside resorts in Cyprus and a top favourite for family holidays. Larnaca is on the Southern, most sunny part of the island and is at the centre of a great swathe of safe, sandy beaches. The town itself has a great holiday feel to it with an array of outside restaurants, tavernas and cafes. It is also the main harbour for Cyprus so there is always something interesting to watch on the seaward side of the promenade. Larnaca has a long history and there are no less than six town centre museums as well as important archaeological sites close by. One of the main attractions of Cyprus as a holiday destination is the extra opportunity for family outings away from the beach or swimming pool. There are enough Wildlife and Water Parks nearby to keep the kids busy and active and for nature lovers there are the cool forest trails in the Troodos Mountains to explore on foot or by mountain bike. Probably the nicest thing about Cyprus is just the sheer childfriendlyness of the Cypriot people. They really make you feel welcome. Tips for that extra special family holiday in Larnaca:
• A camel ride is usually popular with children and it is the specialty at the Mazotos Camel Park. The Park also has a Noah’s Ark with a cute collection of mainly local animals. With indoor and outside play areas, a swimming pool, restaurant and cafe, it makes for a pleasant day out. It is also not very expensive.
• Other riding options are also on offer. Check out either horse riding from the Tochni Riding Centre or the Oroklini Donkey Park, an especial favourite with younger children. Both are near Larnaca.
• A trip in a submarine is expensive but then again it is rather special. It goes out from Larnacas Marina and is the only tourist submarine in Cyprus. The underwater viewing is really clear through large round portholes. The highlight is seeing an actual shipwreck on the seabed.
• An early evening walk along the palm tree-lined seafront promenade during the summer months will show you why Larnaca is so popular. Packed with cafés, bars and restaurants, this is where most of the action can be found. Needless to say this is where the teenagers will head for.
• If your normal Sunday at home is a walk in the country then take a picnic and head to one of the many nature trails. The most scenic are in the high Troodos Mountains, An added bonus are the little villages where you can stop on the way.
• There are plenty of water sports available to entertain the kids. All of the main resorts have water sport centres, where you can watch or to learn a new sport like paragliding, sea-kayaking or kite boarding. If you are interested in beach sporting activities, head for the CTO Beach in Larnaca where various events and tournaments are held including water sports and volleyball.
