When we booked our Cancun holiday I think I was hoping for something a little more cultured than Cancun. In hindsight from a man made resort we should have known it would be nothing more than a high class Blackpool with glorious beaches. Sadly, I'm not a sunbather. We visited Barcelo Costa in July and the temperatures were out of this world, reaching nearly 40degreesC on some days. Way, way too hot. I don't recommend that you take children during this time of the year. It's almost unbearable. Although I would have preferred to be located nearer to the temples/pyramids of Mexico, Barcelo Costa Cancun was a great 4* hotel near the centre of the Cancun strip. It was just next to the Pirate Ship Evening expedition/meal/show which was popular with families and adults alike, although it did finish quite late. Not to far away was the shopping centre and Coco Bongos which was sadly aimed at adults. It's a live laser club but with live performances and would be fab for younger children. Unfortunately, you will find that Cancun is mainly aimed at young drinkers and a lot of the main attractions hold this as their target market. There are wonderful opportunities to go snorkelling etc. which is great fun and there is also an amazing waterpark at the bottom of the Cancun strip which is fantastic for all ages. You can also swim with dolphins here. The hotel rooms are large with air con and we had a lovely sea view/pool view room with balcony. The rooms had a plasma TV & DVD, mini bar and room service (all included). The bathrooms were clean and tidy. Maid service was excellent. Staff were lovely and the pool was kept alive by games and challenges for all ages. There were plenty of children playing in and around the pool and they were all having a great time. There was a small selection of restaurants, the buffet, seafood restaurant and also the mexican. The buffet was our first port of call and the food was good but not excellent. I admit that I had to venture into town one day to buy a Subway. I was desperate for some normal food. The holiday was relatively expensive £2,100 for 2 adults, free child (free child offer no longer applicable) for 14 nights all inclusive. This included the unlimited mini bar, one room service per day, all drinks and food, pool and beach facilities. It was a lovely hotel in a great Cancun location but I wouldn't return. I simply can't justify the amount spent on such a lack of culture or adventure. Making the holiday exciting with excursions to temples, swimming with dolphins etc. made it a really costly stay.
