St Lucia is your dream holiday destination, if a beach family holiday on a tropical island is what is on your mind. St Lucia is a small isand, girded with palm shaded sandy beaches and surrounded by that multi blue-hued sea that is a Caribbean speciality. Two rain-forested mountains divide the island to provide an extra dramatic backdrop to the view, as well as providing a fascinating outing away from the beach. Most of the resorts we recommend, as well as providing all the facilities you would expect, run clubs for the children so that you can have a chance to relax for some of the time on your own. There are also plenty of things to do on the island of St Lucia, from golf to boating when relaxing from the more strenuous activities such as squash or windsurfing. Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in St Lucia:
- Take a tour inland to see and walk in the magnificent rain forests with their wild orchids, tropical birds, giant ferns and stunning waterfalls.
- Every Friday evening the little fishing village of Gros Islet holds a weekly mini-carnival. There is dancing in the streets to Reggae and Soca music, (they call it jump-up) and it will certainly get the kids jumping. Do try and get up in time to visit the colourful Saturday market in Soufriere, the oldest town in St. Lucia. It is just such a pretty place.
- Drive through the La Soufriere volcano. Don’t worry its only slightly active and there’s a lovely rotten eggs smell from some of the steaming vents like the stink bombs the Weasley twins make in the Harry Potter books
- Do your sightseeing on horseback or on mountain bikes. Something really special is the Jungle Biking Adventure where the kids can ride on special trails through the rain forest. They will love it and it will tire them out!
- Take a picnic to the Maria Island Nature Reserve. The two tiny islands which make up the Reserve are home to rare species of harmless reptiles and birds. There is a small visitor centre, a little beach to swim from and a coral reef to snorkel over.
- St Lucia is s one of the leading whale watching sites in the Caribbean as well as a favourite area for turtles. Try and get to see some, if the season is right.
