The name Zante means flower of the east, and it is one of the most popular Greek Island destinations for a family holiday. The eastern side of Zante is green and flat, bounded by long sandy beaches and this is where most of our resorts can be found. The west side is mountainous with towering white cliffs overhanging the sea, providing some contrasting outings from your tiring days of lazing on the beach. The main town of Zante with an impressive cathedral and bustling port has a great holiday feel to it, with all you could wish for in the way of places to eat and shop. We offer a huge choice of family holiday accommodation. From Villas with a view of the Greek Mainland to the North, to apartments close to the main resorts of Tsilivi, Argassi and Zane itself, and hotels or apartments in self-contained Beach Holiday Villages. Most of these options come with swimming pool complexes and many also run Mini Clubs to help keep the kids happy. Check out our great selection of Child Friendly holidays in Zante below or read on for some tips on attractions and days out.
Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in Zante:
- The Blue Caves are a must see visit. The water is an unbelievable electric blue. The caves are reached from the sea and the smaller the boat you arrive in the better, as a great hit for the children is to put their hands in the water and see them turn blue!
- Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) is another must see. The contrast of the stunning colours of the sea to the white cliffs makes it one of the most photographed beaches in the world. You cant get to it from the land side but you can peer down on it. Obviously there are many boat tours available with some allowing you some time on the beach itself. . If you had a choice to be shipwrecked anywhere in the world this would probably be it. Come and see why.
- A short train ride is always a popular option for the kids and you will also enjoy this inexpensive trip. The ‘ToTrainaki” tour train takes you up into the mountains, ending in Pigadakia. A stop at a museum focusing on island life is included. If you take an evening tour there is the option of a Greek Night at a local Taverna.
- The main town is Zante and at some stage or other you will find yourself here to do some shopping and a bit of sightseeing. It is a picturesque small port with Venetian style buildings grouped around the harbour. The most popular way of seeing the town for the kids is to leisurely trundle around in one of their little tourist trains. That way you can decide which museum to pop back to and/ or which taverna looks the most promising for lunch!
- Saint Denis (Dionysius) is the patron saint of Zante and his mummified remains are housed in the most important church in the town. Well worth a visit if you like architecture. If you are lucky enough to be there on his Saints Day (24th August), his sanctified remains are paraded through the streets accompanied by very loud brass bands. A parade well worth seeing. The festival also extends into the evening and the next two days, which makes Saint Denis very popular with both locals and tourists alike.
