Weekend from Hell
10 Nov 2011
Visited with: Child
I booked the stay as I wanted a special weekend for my partners 50th birthday and for my 4 and 5 yo children. The promise of 4 star accommodation at a 'friendly farm bed and breakfast' in a room that sleeps 2 adults and 2 children was most appealing.
On arrival at Potters Farm my children and I received an abrupt greeting from the owner and I was very disappointed to find that one of my children was expected to sleep on mattress on the floor - this was not something I would have expected from a 4 star establishment. The owner stated that she had to leave and that we were expected to stay at the farm to greet the other guests and show them to their room. This is something I have never experienced in all the years spent travelling both in this country and abroad. The other guests arrived and were equally surprised that there was no one from the farm to show them to their accommodation.
We were told that we had to be at breakfast by a stipulated time that I assume was convenient for them and we were told that we were going to get the breakfast 'how she liked it'. On one morning we were late and we had her husband thumping and shouting through our door.
During my stay I developed a cough which gradually got worse. At breakfast the owner kept drawing attention to my cough in front of other guests and I felt humiliated by the whole experience. My partner went out with one of my sons and she came to our room after he had left she came to the room stating 'he better not have gone out to get pizza'!!
I made a cup of coffee using the milk supplied and the milk was off. When I presented her with the curdled drink she insisted that the milk was fine when it clearly wasn't. When I asked for fresh milk she reluctantly gave us some milk and when I asked for more coffee to make another cup she begrudged stating she had already filled the coffee pot.
On departure I went to pay with my credit card only to be told cash only. I reluctantly paid by cheque although I was unsure if I had the funds to clear. In addition to all of this since our stay, I have had a number of abusive phone calls from the owner as sadly I did not have the funds as I was expecting to pay by credit card. I am now at a point where I am unwilling to pick up phone calls unless I know who is calling me. I secured the booking with a legitimate credit card and at no time during this booking procedure was it suggested that a payment of cash or cheque only would be required. Even checking the Potters Hill website there was no mention of cash or cheque only. As a single parent with a young family I do not carry that sort of cash with me and I use my credit card as I can pay items back over an extended period.
The final straw to our stay came when we walked to our car only to find one of their daughters blasting the horn of her parents car and shaking her fists. I found the whole stay extremely distressing.
I found the owner an abusive and nasty woman who has absolutely no sense of hospitality at all. I object to being ordered to pay by paypal as I do not have an active account. As far as I am concerned, I made the booking by credit card via laterooms on the understanding that my credit card was acceptable currency. I do not believe that Potters Hill Farm has the right to advertise accommodation of 4 star quality as a bed on the floor for a guest is totally out of order. Their treatment of me during the stay was appalling and I am distressed as to how things escalated.
I have since reluctantly paid by postal order.
