We stayed at the Oceania Club Resort & Spa in Nea Moudania from 26 September - 3 October 2011.
I'll be a typical Brit and get the weather out of the way... I was DREADING it. I was really nervous that it would rain and be too chilly to enjoy the pool or the sea. I was so pleasantly surprised. Some days temperatures hit a toasty 27 degrees C. The coldest day was the Saturday, when we were out on the sea viewing Mount Athos (it's always colder out on sea) but even then it was still cardigan temps, nothing colder. We got a great deal going at that time of year, all inclusive, so if the weather is the main thing that is putting you off, it's well worth the risk.
The hotel itself is gorgeous. The staff are friendly and helpful. The lobby is stunning and the patio windows to the back of the reception area give you an immediately striking view over the sea. There is ample seating (although we went during low season and we did struggle to get a seat at night on a couple of occasions) in the bar area, with sofas and comfy chairs available. The place is immaculately clean and it we were pleased to find that it wasn't just the lobby which had such high standards.
We stayed in a junior suite, which gave us access to the private pool. The room was gorgeous. The balcony had glass tables, a small hidden washing line and a view over the sea. So stunning. Our bed was huge and our bathroom came with gorgeous toiletries. There was a separate area within the room with a child's bed for our son to stay in. There was also a lamp and a side table in this area and it didn't feel like it had been an after thought; the room was really well organsied.
The living area was in the same space as the double bed which meant that you could watch films and spend some time on the balcony at night once you have got the kids to sleep. This is, of course, if you have a perfect family. My son liked to climb in with us at various times and I think there was even a remark at some point during that week by the other half that, 'Holidays don't mean you get the same as you used to. It doesn't feel all that inclusive.' Bless.
Moving on to the all inclusive (and not THAT kind), the food was just about as good as you could expect. When you stay in an all inclusive resort you do anticipate that by the end of the week you will start getting a little bored of the same type of food. I'm a proper northern English lass and I was dying for a pie and a good steak by the end of the week but that aside, the food was great. Much better than any all inclusive we've used before including some top resorts in Mexico.
The all inclusive was buffet style and there was plenty to choose from, loads of it. You really couldn't fault the choice - there was everything from greek salads to children's tomato pasta. They had thought of everything.
We LOVED that we had free access to the three al a carte during our stay. All inclusive guests were welcome to use the Italian, Greek and Asian restaurants once each during their stay. We all really enjoyed the Italian and Asian restaurant and my partner really rated the Greek one too. I wouldn't like to comment because Greek food isn't my thing, but he said it was excellent (and I trust him, he's a chef).
The pools, yes, there are a few, are excellent. Really fresh and clean. Despite us having access to the private pool we did choose to use the main pool area. This is actually an eternity pool which is gorgeous for looking out onto the sea. We've never had the pleasure of staying somewhere which has an eternity pool before, it was really breathtaking at night, especially during a sunset. So gorgeous.
Various activities do take place during the day in the pool, games and water aerobics, for example. I expect there is more during high-season but there were still activities taking place while we stayed there.
We loved that you were able to use inflatables in the pool (IN A 5* HOTEL!?). Great! It was a godsend and our son really was thankful for it. Love that a hotel is showing that 5* doesn't have to mean snobby! This, to be honest, reflects their whole attitude towards children throughout our entire stay. They love them and really push the boat out to make sure that there's something going on for them and they're kept happy.
The beach is a short walk down the hill. The hotel itself is scattered across the hill so it can be a bit of a walk to various places. Our room was quite central so it wasn't too bad. I don't really know how far it spans but the hotel is pretty well laid out so I doubt that anyone would have to walk very far. It's not a problem, just a note really.
The beach is man-made, but it's stunning so we didn't care. It is a small strip and I do expect it would be very busy during high season but we found it was perfect. I have read a few reviews that speak about urchins but my partner and my son were in the water loads and we didn't have any problems. I took my son out on the pedal boats a few times and I didn't notice anyone having any issues on the beach.
The pedal boats are free, as is use of the (very comfy) sun loungers and tables for the day.
There is an all inclusive bar by the beach and by the pool. Waiters and waitresses do the rounds very frequently to make sure you keep topped up. They do a gorgeous Bellini (it's made with sweet sparkling wine, instead of champagne... but on the upside you can drink it ALL. DAY.) and they bring you a new one every half hour or so. Pretty good going. Plenty for the kids including juices and unlimited ice-creams.
We didn't use a lot of the entertainment services because our three year old was ready for bed really when we'd eaten our evening meal. The latest we were out of the room was 9pm, when we stopped by the bar on our way back and listened to some live music and had a few cocktails. It was enjoyable and there was a great atmosphere. We did notice posters for shows and musicals, as well as a late night club but I can't comment on this as we didn't use the facility. What I can say though is that during the last weeks before closing the hotel, having a show every night but one is pretty impressive. We wouldn't expect that during low season at all.
We took our son to a children's disco one night which he didn't like (it's always your child that's awkward isn't it) but there was plenty of other children having a ball. It was a good hour or so and the disco was supervised with staff showing children dance actions. We stayed because our oddball son wanted to watch the other children dance, but didn't want to dance himself and I was impressed by how the team interacted with the children.
We also saw a few children being looked after in the kids club during out stay. There is an a park within the hotel grounds and they were playing games in there and all the children seemed well looked after and attended to. I did let my son play so I could have a nosey while they were there and they were very good with the children. We don't use such services because we don't get much family time together and I felt he was a bit young this time but I would definitely consider letting him go to the kids club when he was a little older if we went back to Oceania.
It is worth noting that the hotel isn't actually in Sani (although it is very close). It is in Nea Moudania which is a town for locals and isn't built up to please or entertain tourists. There is a local market every Wednesday, which we went to and was very disappointed and a tiny square which is exactly that, tiny, nothing more than a couple of cafes and a few shops. If you fancy a cold drink in different surroundings then it might be worth getting the hotels free shuttle down to the town and having a wander to the square for a drink and a walk to the port but really it's not somewhere that you can explore. The market is for locals and not worth visiting, it didn't even feel particularly cultural; it felt like I had stumbled on my own Friday market with fruit and veg stalls and naff character merchandise.
The port isn't far from the beach, which you can walk along to get back to the hotel. It's a nice walk out and shouldn't take you longer than 20 minutes to get back.
All in all a lovely holiday. If you like staying in the hotel, eating, drinking and bathing then this really is a place I would recommend. If you like to explore areas then please note that you will need to pay to go on excursions to feel satisfied by this holiday. The Mount Athos boat trip is one we invested in but had we been there without a child we would have probably spent more.
