As a resident of the Peak District it’s very easy for us to take for granted our varied landscapes, environmental and man-made attractions as well as the friendlessness of its residents. When we leave the region only then do we realise that the Peaks (as the locals refer to the area) has some great food and drink supplies as well as many of the North’s great cities on our border such as Manchester and Sheffield.
Friends of ours yet to experience the Peaks naively believe that Britain’s first National Park is just for the outdoors enthusiasts yet it’s far more than a walkers, cyclists, horse riders and climbers’ paradise.
There’s lots on offer for families visiting the Peak District where you’ll need a full day to experience the thrills and spills of Alton Towers, the nostalgic magic of Crich Tramway Museum or the splendour of Chatsworth House and Garden. A trip to the Peaks has to include taking the waters at Buxton, eating a tart in Bakewell and a wander round Matlock, all of which have great child friendly parks with playgrounds.
With no coastline in Derbyshire we decided to create that seaside atmosphere at Matlock Bath where you’ll find the Heights of Abraham and Gullivers World. From a local to a visitor I always recommend a trip to one of our many caves – Blue John Cavern, Pooles Cavern, Treak, Cliff Cavern or Creswell Craggs. Another must is to reach one of our many natural wonders (hills) such as the landmark Kinder Scout, Mam Tor or if you want a leisurely stroll try the stepping stones at Dovedale.
Another reason we love living here is we have the pleasure of living in an area of outstanding beauty without the crowds that flock to other National Park. As it can be quieter than many obvious visitor attractions, rates for family friendly accommodation is very reasonable and there are some great deals to be snapped up.
Give the Peaks a go it’s much more than drystone walls, Pennine trails, farms, valleys, world heritage site and memorable landscapes.
